The National Federation of Education (FNE) has warned of the precarious situation facing approximately 8,000 teachers who commute over 100 km daily to teach, many of whom are ineligible for travel subsidies, leading to monthly fuel costs of up to 250 euros. The issue stems from the exclusion of teachers who live between 50 km and 70 km from their workplace, as the extraordinary subsidy only applies to those placed further than 70 km away. Pedro Barreiros, Secretary-General of the FNE, argued that given the small size of this group, it would be financially feasible for the Ministry of Education to provide support. The meeting also addressed the revision of the Teaching Career Statute and a new recruitment model, which includes a national competition and a continuous recruitment process to reduce the number of students without teachers.
