Limitations in access to the National Health Service (SNS) are pushing an increasing number of Portuguese people towards the private sector, causing direct household health expenditure to soar to levels well above those recorded in most European countries. This is the conclusion of a study by Ana Pinheiro and Jorge Braga Ferreira.
