Ibero-African for Moroccans and Spaniards, Euro-Atlantic-Mediterranean for the Portuguese!

The current moment is ripe for utopia as a form of resistance and hope, much like the belief that Trump, like the pandemic, will eventually pass. Amidst the dystopias of uncertainty, a transcontinental political utopia between the Iberian Peninsula and its closest neighbours emerges. Drawing on the analysis of Yassine El Yattioui, this perspective explores the Ibero-African axis as a strategic opportunity. With 600 million Spanish speakers, the Rabat-Madrid axis extends across Latin America and the US. Morocco, meanwhile, is positioning itself as an Atlantic power through the Abraham Accords and the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP). From a Portuguese perspective, the challenge is to embrace a Mediterranean consciousness, adding Algeria to the equation due to its critical role in gas supply. By leveraging the 2030 World Cup as a catalyst for regional alignment, Portugal can advocate for the realisation of both gas projects, potentially linking Tangier to Sines for green hydrogen production and transforming the Algiers-Guincho axis into a robust Euro-Atlantic-Mediterranean bloc.
