We regret that the ICNF continues to be in the news for the worst reasons. We would like the ICNF to be recognised, not for controversies, but for discussing the future of nature conservation in Portugal. Opinion by Maria de Jesus Fernandes

ICNF is Portugal’s Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas), the state agency that manages protected areas, forests and many environmental licences. In this story ICNF matters because changes to laws or ministerial guidance can affect whether projects pass environmental checks or need different permits.

Sustainability (sustentabilidade) means meeting present needs without reducing the ability of future generations to meet theirs, covering environmental, economic and social dimensions.
