Press review: One third of new course applications rejected and allergy season extended

Público highlights this Saturday that one third of applications to open higher education courses were rejected. The newspaper states that last year, universities and polytechnics submitted 336 proposals for new study cycles. Including those submitted and processes from previous years, the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) evaluated 391. One third did not receive approval to proceed. Jornal de Notícias reports that climate change is intensifying symptoms and extending the allergy season. There is a gradual but sustained increase in the consumption of antihistamines in Portugal: in March, approximately 706,000 packs of these medications were dispensed in Portuguese pharmacies, 11% more than in the same month last year. Correio da Manhã states that people who consulted a doctor currently under investigation for facilitating disability pensions in exchange for one thousand euros face up to 8 years in prison. According to the newspaper, the doctor has travelled to Mozambique, from where she cannot be extradited. Also according to CM, jeweller Eugénio Campos is one of the defendants in the case known as the 'Bankruptcy Mafia'. He allegedly asked for help from lawyer Paulo Topa - now in preventive detention - and, according to the Public Prosecutor's Office, agreed to join a scheme to dissipate assets in order to evade debt payments.
